The Bishop Heelan Band program is under the direction of Mr. James Kunz. Our high school Spanish teacher, Ms. Lexie Klein, doubles as the drumline coordinator. Mrs. Stephanie Janssen is an assistant with the marching band and teaches full-time at Holy Cross Middle School. The band offers four programs: Concert, Marching, Jazz, and Pep Band.
Members of band participate in a variety of activities including Fall Play, Musical, Choir, Show Choir, Debate, Art, Miracle Makers, AWARE, Swimming, Cross Country, Football, Cheerleading, Tennis, Soccer, and Track. There are several students in the National Honor Society and three Eagle Scouts.
The Concert Band is the primary focus of the curriculum. In this ensemble students to play with each other to achieve musical excellence.
The Bishop Heelan Marching Crusaders are proud to present their 2016 show, ‘Frameworks’. The show features music from Modesty Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ as well as ‘Nimrod’ by Edward Elgar. The show is partially inspired by the band’s recent trip to New York, which included a stop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This 42-piece group is in its third year of competitive marching.
The Heelan Gold and Blues jazz band is an auditioned group that teaches the history of America's very own art form. In this ensemble, students learn to play a variety of musical styles: swing, shuffle, bop, latin, rock, funk, ballads, and many others. Students who participate in this auditioned band are encouraged to learn to improvise and participate in five festivals from January through March. Auditions take place in late September and the band begins rehearsing in October.
When Winter comes, the pep band can be found at home Boys and Girls Basketball games. Students get to play popular tunes from a variety of eras prior to the games and during halftime. The trap set and electric bass bring an element of rock and roll to the traditional concert band instrumentation. Students have a blast playing music with their friends and hanging out at the games in this ensemble.
